01/12/2009 16:10:37 Streetbeaters Hi Folks,

We are looking for experienced drummers (that means YOU!) to take part in an amazing performance at part of the NewcastleGateshead Winter Carnival on New Years Eve 2009.

Drums, costumes, fireworks, soup! What more could you want?

More info can be found on the project site at http://www.nyedrumming.co.uk/

If you haven't been drumming for a while, then this is a perfect opportunity to get back into it.

We hope lots of you can take part.

Best wishes

Chris - Worldbeaters Music

28/09/2009 10:20:23 Streetbeaters Dear drummers,

Unfortunately Streetbeaters will not be starting up again this autumn. Sadly, falling numbers have made it impossible to keep the group running.

Thanks to everyone who has played with Streetbeaters over the last few years, we hope you have enjoyed it and have happy memories!

There is a possibility that the Arts Development Service will start up something new on a Monday night - and there is also a mass drumming gig planned for New Year's Eve in Newcastle. When we get any news of either of these we can pass them on to you via this group. If you would rather not receive this information, please use the link below to unsubscribe from this list. Otherwise, watch this space for news of other drumming opportunities in the area,

Best wishes,
Streetbeaters

P.S. Other bands that are still going in case you are suffering from Samba deprivation include:

~ Drumdin http://www.drumdin.co.uk/
~ Custom Beats http://www.custombeats.org.uk/
~ Bangshees (women only) http://www.bangshees.com/

02/07/2009 11:31:09 Streetbeaters Dear Streetbeater,

Contrary to what the tutors are saying, there will be a session on July 6th, but without the tutors as they are unavailable. It will give us a chance for an informal gathering to see whether we still have a band worth pursuing.

Don't forget we've got the Cookson Parade this Saturday morning too! Please reply to this email if you can do that one.

Our last session for the summer will be the Monday 13th July.

15/06/2009 15:09:18 Streetbeaters Dear Streetbeaters member

You are invited to the Streetbeaters Annual General Meeting at 6.15pm on Monday 29 June in the Sinfonia Centre, Jesmond Vale. The meeting will last approximately 1 hour so we aim to finish the meeting & start drumming at 7.15pm.

As this is the AGM, all committee members will be standing down & we will be seeking nominations for committee members & officers positions as detailed below. If you are interested in joining the committee or standing as one of the officers, it would be helpful if you could let me know in advance of the meeting though we can also take nominations on the day. The Committee will consist of the following, with other members co-opted as necessary:-

A chair (Sue K is standing, nominated by Emily and Joyce; needs to be voted in at the AGM)
A Secretary
A Treasurer
A Publicity/PR person
and
Two other people

I look forward to seeing you there.

best wishes

Susan Holt (Streetbeaters Committee Secretary)

19/05/2009 12:14:58 Streetbeaters Hi to all Streetbeaters members!

We're coming up to the summer season when we always get to do some very enjoyable gigs. We'll be playing along with Custom Beats (the South Shields group Chris & Alex also lead), see below for dates. There's 3 Monday night practices before the first gig and it'd be great to get as many of us along as possible so we're sounding our best on the day! Don't worry if you've not been for a while, this is the perfect time to come back along.

Gigs for the summer:-
Saturday 20th June Bents Park South Shields 12-3 (exact times tbc)
Saturday 4th July Cookson Parade South Shields 11-2 (exact times tbc)
Tuesday 4th August Tommy's Party Amphitheatre Seafront South Shields 1pm - 3pm.
Sunday 20th September Great North Run (yet to be confirmed)

Also, some of you may know, we're now having to collect the key each week for practices at the Sinfonia Centre. This is potentially going to make it difficult to practice sometimes if no-one can get along to pick up keys so if anyone might be free on any Mondays between 10am & 4pm to pop along to the Sinfonia Centre & collect the key could you let me know? (email susanjholt@hotmail.com). All help gratefully received, we don't need one volunteer to do it every week, hopefully we'll have enough people to take turns so we don't have to cancel any practices.

Look forward to seeing you Monday nights in preparation for the gigs!

31/03/2009 17:53:57 Streetbeaters Hi All

After unfortunately having to cancel the busk last Saturday due to the weather, we’re hoping to reschedule for sometime over the next month or so.

There’s no practices the next two Mondays but if we get a good turnout at the next practice on 20 April we’re hoping to be able to go ahead with a busk on 25 April. I think we were all ready for the busk last Saturday and were really looking forward to it so it would be a great to get out there & show off our skills.

Also, Fin has recently been on a Japanese drumming workshop and has promised to bring some of the rhythms along in the practices after Easter to give us a chance to have a go ourselves (lots of surdos needed apparently!). Sounds like good fun!

Enjoy the Easter break and hope to see you on 20 April.

25/03/2009 13:00:51 Streetbeaters Busk this Saturday! Streetbeaters will be busking this Saturday, 28th March, at the Monument in Newcastle from 11am (if others have beaten us to the pitch we will be on Northumberland Street).

Those taking part, please meet at monument 10:30am in SB t-shirts (or red and black). Be prepared for a great, fun (possible cold) day of entertaining the good folk of Newcastle out shopping.

Hope to see lots of you there :-)

13/03/2009 10:46:24 Streetbeaters Dear Streetbeaters

Just a reminder about the Streetbeaters Busk on 28 March - if you haven't put your name down already let me know if you can make it (email susanjholt@hotmail.com).

Thanks to everyone whose replied to say they're hoping to come, we need 5 more definite yes's for the busk to go ahead. The more of us there are the better the vibe and the more fun we'll all have! If you can make the busk, it'd be great if you could come along to the next two practices so we can perfect the set list. Don't worry if you haven't been for a while, we'll be running through all pieces for the busk over the next two Monday practices, 7.15pm Sinfonia Centre.

This busk is really vital for the future of the group. Funding for the group to continue relies on us doing 4 busks a year and as numbers have been low recently, this will be a chance to get our flyers out there & attract some new members to help keep the group going. We'll all benefit from making it a good one. The group's been sounding brilliant at practices - let's get out there & show everyone what we can do!

Arrangements are:- Saturday 28 March, 10.30am (for 11am start) at the Monument in Newcastle.

If you can make it EMAIL ME NOW!!!! susanjholt@hotmail.com

Look forward to seeing you all soon!

24/02/2009 13:09:49 Streetbeaters Hello to all Streetbeaters members!

Are you able to attend a busk on Saturday 28 March, 10.30am (for 11am start) at the Monument in Newcastle? If so, please reply to this message to let me know by next Monday (2 March).

This will be an excellent opportunity to publicise our group and recruit new members as well as hopefully raising a bit of money. Above all, this will give us a good chance to play in public which is always great fun! If you've not been to practice for a while, why not come back along on a Monday night during March and get ready for the busk?

Please reply to let me know if you can make the busk as we need to confirm with Chris & Alex if we are to ahead.

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

25/09/2008 16:46:06 Streetbeaters Did anyone spot the deliberate mistake in the last mailout? Alex put October instead of September...

Details for THIS Saturday 27th SEPTEMBER

Looks like we'll have to move very slowly!

Meet at the Iris Brickfield site, Heaton - it's the open space behind
Whitefield Terrace - for the start of the procession at 10am. The procession runs from the Iris Brickfield site to Heaton Community Centre on Trewhitt Road, quite a short distance - it's planned to get to the centre at 11am.

Also this Sunday evening (28th SEPTEMBER) Afro Lata and Pe Na Rua are
performing at Dance City. Should be a great gig to go and watch. Call Dance City for details.

And we'll be performing with the Bangshees and Custom Beats at the World
Aids Day Saturday 6th December.

03/06/2008 15:55:37 Streetbeaters - gig this Sat STOP PRESS! Gig this Saturday and extra mid-week rehearsal!!

We have a gig this Saturday, 7th June. It’s at Druridge Bay Country Park for a massive family fun day which is raising funds for an African village.

We’ll be teaming up with Custom Beats again and it should be a lot of fun. We’ll be playing on stage and doing some parading between 11-2pm so be there for 10:45am, wearing your Streetbeater T-shirts. We need as many people there as possible and we need to turn on the performance and rock out! Here’s a link to directions:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=druridge+bay+country+park&ie=UTF8&ll=55.317986,-1.549255&spn=0.004396,0.014334&t=h&z=17

Also, Custom Beats won’t be at their usual rehearsal venue, The Customs House, this Wednesday 4th June, so there's an opportunity for Streetbeaters to have an extra mid-week practice at the Sinf (opposite the Bluebell Pub).

If you can make the rehearsal then that would be great as we’ll be practicing for Saturday, if not then just turn up on Saturday - the more the merrier. If anyone has transport issues then ring me. Hope to see you there,

Alex

14/05/2008 13:20:31 Streetbeaters - AGM Monday June 9th The AGM will be on Monday June 9th at 8:15 pm after an hour of drumming in the Sinfonia Centre. It has been agreed that it is best to have this meeting on a Monday night so that as many people as possible can make it. We have had to change the date as some key people could not make May 19th and the accounts need to be audited in time for this meeting too which we are organising. The meeting will last 1 hour and then those who fancy on to the Bluebell for a drink.

This is a really important meeting as it will determine the future of the groups and Worldbeaters Music have a proposal to present to the group for Streetbeaters 08-09. I will bring printed copies of the proposal along this Monday 19th for people to look at in advance of the meeting.

Sunday 30th September

It’s that time of year again! I hope you’ve all been in training for the samba drumming equivalent of doing the Great North Run!

When?
==========
Meet at 9am, play till we hit the wall! Around 1:30-2pm

BBC TV coverage starts at 9:30 so we need to be ready in case the cameras come by.

Where?
==========
The Leas on the A183 Coast Road.
We’ll be at a bus stop between Gypsies Green and Souter Lighthouse

Parking
==========
There is a footpath from Hertford Avenue down to the bus stop. You can park on Herford Avenue and this avoids all the road closures.

http://tinyurl.com/3x45pp

There are car parks on the A183 and we have car passes but you would need to be there by 8:30 am and may not get out until after the race has finished.

Metro
==========
The nearest Metro is Chichester

Food
==========
Bring loads! There’s no where nearby to get food so bring sandwiches, flasks of coffee etc. and warm clothes.

04/07/2006 22:32:03 Streetbeaters - AGP (1st) Annual General Picnic in Heaton Park!

The idea is that everybody from all our groups brings a picnic and as many friends and family as possible to Heaton Park where we'll drum for each other and generally have a bit of a jolly (the children have said they would really like to do a little parade around the park!).

We'd appreciate any ideas or contributions to make the day more successful or fun - can anyone paint faces, does anyone have a gazebo - that kind of thing! We hope to have a raffle so tickets will be on sale beforehand and on the day, and contributions of prizes will be most welcome!!

Please let us know if you can do anything to help and SPREAD THE WORD!!! Thanks!

Finally, there's a great photo of Worldbeaters from the Cookson Parade and a link to a video with a short clip of Al et al(!) on the Photos page of our website....

27/06/2006 15:27:21 Streetbeaters - Gigs - Sat, 1st July [1] *Cookson Parade*
- Meet at St. Bede's School playing field, Claypath Lane
- Meet at 11am
- Parade starts at 12 noon
- Parade finishes in Bents Park and will last about an hour

[2] *Westfield School PTA Ball*
Instructions: Please could the band arrive for 6.00pm. Guests will be arriving from 6.15pm approx. The band will be playing outside in a covered gazebo next to the main marquee. Please could they wear bright coloured tops. We will try to find some flower garlands for them to wear.

The main car park entrance is on Elmfield Road, which is off Kenton Road. There is a roundabout on Kenton Road/ Kenton Avenue/ Elmfield Road. Take the Elmfield Road exit and the school is on the right hand side - black wrought iron gates. The marquee is in the grounds, just a short walk from the car park. If you are travelling from the airport area, follow the signs for the A191 to Whitley Bay and Gosforth, this takes you all the way down Kenton Lane, Kenton Road and towards the Town Moor and Grandstand Road

If you are travelling from Grandstand Road, then take the Kenton road turning and Westfield School is on the right hand side just before the first roundabout. You can also enter the school from Oakfield Road and leave cars parked in Oakfield Road. You can drive up the main entrance in Oakfield road to unload equipment but you would then have to move your van to one of the car parks. I would suggest parking in the Elmfield Road car park.

Wheelchair access - there are no steps - just tarmac and grass - there is a slight step up to the area where the gazebo is but I think a wheelchair can be taken across the grass in another area to avoid the step. There is wheelchair access inside the school building to go to the toilet but it is a girls' school so I will have to check what the facilities are for men.

Edinburgh. On Sunday 6 we will showcase a big drumming/singing/dancing

05/03/2006 21:29:34 Streetbeaters in the Sunday Sun! Our busk this Saturday brought the attention of the local paper! Unfortunately they printed the wrong web address and phone number, and the reporter didn't get there in time to take a picture, but... See 'News' page for direct link.

There are also some new photos from the busk on the 'Photos' page.

Finally, PLEASE don't forget the first *Annual General Meeting* this Monday - 7pm at the Sinfonia Centre. It's very important you *all* attend. There will be no Worldbeaters that night, but Beatniks and Bang On will be on as normal.

02/03/2006 11:03:33 Edd News - en route to Sidney I just had news from Edd who's taking a year out (from drumming!) and thought you'd like to read it to...

Well hello there,

Greetings to one and all from afar,

My 2 weeks training in Sri Lanka has now come to a finish and I feel I
have truly gained a Brown belt in the art of wheelchair construction. It
has been a fruitful couple of weeks and with my hours of previous
experience in IKEA flat pack conceptualisation and construction I think
i'm a natural at this wheelchair deal!!

I am currently sat In Bankok airport on my change over before flighing to
Sydney. So I have 7 hours to fill before my next departure - theres only
so many times you can go to the toilet or trying a different aftershave
before you look and smell a bit of a weirdo!! So here I am on the
internet.

Sri Lanka was a nice place once you get out of the capital, Columbo, which
was intensely humid, overcrowded and a death trap on trying to navigate
the streets. I think the people there went to the same driving school as
those from thailand; if there's a space in front of you the highway code
says he who gets there first wins (be it a tanker, lorry, car, tin can on
wheels or cattle)!! The white lines on the carraigeways are purely for
decoration to the battered concrete. Neeraj I think you would thrive on
these roads.

So a few Sri Lankan ways I picked up then (might be useful to know
Beatrice when you arrive) you eat with your right and you wipe with your
left (and no I dont mean your mouth!!). I never built the courage to wipe
with my left but I did make the most out of the hose that is used instead
of toilet paper, very refreshing, until you stand up!!

All in all a very hospitable nation and undoubtedly many more hidden
secrets I did not uncover in my 2 weeks there.

So to work. I feel I am now a man on a slightly clearer mission. Yes, I
shall be organising a nations wheelchair service but I now have some clear
goals to achieve in my year (first of which is to find where the plane
leaves from here in Bankok!!). Having had Mr Miyagghee as my instructor I
feel my status as 'the whelchair kid' has ben achieved. With 5 chairs to
my name and a plethora of service development tools to my belt I feel
ready for the challange which lies ahead. However, I could find out once I
get to PNG that in fact, instead of traing and service development they
actually want me to raise money to pay for the service - in which case
plan B is called for (please send your Ideas in the post!!)

Anyway I'll let you know what happens in a months time.

I hope that everyone is well and enjoying the chilling temps that encases
the UK at the moment, I'm sweating my nips off!!

I hope you all have a great month ahead of you, I shall be in touch soon.

Now which ways Australia............

Love and kisses Edd,

20/02/2006 17:32:58 Streetbeaters AGM STREETBEATERS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Dear Streetbeater

On Monday, 6th March 2006 at 7.00pm we shall be holding our first Annual General Meeting at the Old Sinfonia Centre, Jesmond Vale, at which a Management Committee will be elected to administer our group for the next year. We’d be delighted if you could spare a little of your time to come along (we’d like the hall to be overflowing with drummers, parents of drummers and anybody else who may be interested in the aims of our group!). Remember, this is your chance to get involved, offer your support, help secure our group’s future and have a say in how it is run.

Over the past few months, the Temporary Management Committee has worked very hard to set the wheels in motion and Streetbeaters is now a fully constituted community group responsible for Beatniks, BangOn and Worldbeaters. We are currently trying to secure funding so that we may continue with our work whilst we set up strategies to enable us to become sustainable. It is essential to the survival of our group that we form a strong Management Committee and I’d be grateful if you could give some thought as to whether you might have skills, knowledge, time or anything else that may help us to drive this project forward. We are looking for people to fill the positions of Treasurer, Secretary and Chairperson and also several additional Committee Members. If you wish to nominate yourself or anybody else, please try and let us know before the meeting if possible. A copy of our Constitution is enclosed and if you would like to know anything else about the group or what being part of the Committee involves, please don’t hesitate to speak to me or any of the other Committee Members. We can also be contacted through our fabulous website – www.streetbeaters.co.uk!

Please bear in mind that Streetbeaters is run entirely by volunteers and we would really appreciate any help you may be in a position to offer us. I look forward to seeing you at the Annual General Meeting if not before.

26/01/2006 10:18:58 Streetbeaters Hi everyone!

Just to let you know that we'll be featured in the 'Get Involved' section of the magazine with the Journal on Tuesday 31st (next week)! This is basically advertising what we do and when, where and how people can join in.

At a later date they are going to send somebody to join in with us on a Monday night and have a chat with us about how the organisation works and then write a piece for the actual paper in which they will mention that we are looking for money!

Repeat after me - 'David Whetstone from the Journal is my friend'! See you on Monday!

Joanna
